The wagering requirement calculator works out how much you must bet and what it costs. It cannot read the rest of the terms, and several of them decide whether you keep anything at all. These are the ones to check every time, roughly in order of how often they cost people money.
Expiry: the deadline on the playthrough
Every bonus has a window. If the requirement is not met inside it, the bonus and its winnings are usually forfeited. In the regulated welcome terms we read, the window was 7 days from opting in.
Turn the calculator’s time figure into a plan. If it says 6 hours of play and you have 7 days, that is under an hour a day. If it says 30 hours, the deadline will push you into longer, faster sessions than you would otherwise play, which is exactly when budgets slip. A bonus you cannot clear comfortably inside the window is worth less than its headline.
Eligible and excluded games
Only eligible games count toward the requirement, and terms can exclude games by type or by name. Common patterns in regulated US terms:
- Slots only, or selected slots only. One large operator’s welcome terms, as published in late 2025, counted only “select slot games.”
- Whole game types barred from bonus play, such as craps, roulette, baccarat and sic bo in the same terms.
- Named slot titles excluded from clearing, often listed in the general terms rather than the promotion page.
Playing an excluded game does not move the requirement at all, and in some terms using bonus funds on it breaks the offer. Game contribution explains why casinos exclude low-edge games.
Bet limits and betting patterns
Some bonus terms cap the stake per spin or per hand while a bonus is active. The point is to stop a player from making a few very large bets to chase a big win with bonus money. If a limit exists and you break it, the bonus and its winnings can be voided, sometimes only when you try to withdraw.
We did not find a stated bet limit in the regulated US welcome terms we read, but bet limits are common in bonus terms in general, so look for one before you raise your stake. A related rule did appear: a ban on betting both sides of an even-money game, such as red and black in roulette or player and banker in baccarat, which would let a player run up turnover at almost no risk.
If you are playing with a bet limit, enter that limit as your bet in the calculator. It often turns a short session into a long one.
The order your money is used in
While a bonus is active, your balance may be split into your deposit, bonus funds and winnings from bonus funds. The terms must say which is used first: New Jersey (N.J.A.C. 13:69O-1.12), Pennsylvania and Michigan all list the order funds are applied as a required term. In the regulated terms we read, the deposit tied to the bonus went first, then bonus funds, then winnings from bonus funds.
The order decides what you lose if you stop early. If your deposit is used first and you walk away halfway, you may have spent your own money while the bonus stays locked.
Rules that protect you
Regulated states also set rules in the player’s favor. They are worth knowing because offers from unlicensed sites often do not follow them.
| Protection | Where it is written |
|---|---|
| No cap on winnings once you have met the promotion’s terms | New Jersey N.J.A.C. 13:69O-1.12(f), Pennsylvania 58 Pa. Code § 813a.3, Michigan R 432.649 |
| A clear way to cancel a promotion that uses restricted credits, and the return of your unrestricted funds | New Jersey 13:69O-1.12(d) and (e), Michigan R 432.649 |
| Terms in plain language, available until the promotion is complete | New Jersey 13:69O-1.12(c), Pennsylvania § 813a.3, Michigan R 432.649 |
The first one is the big difference from many offshore offers, which often limit how much of a bonus win you may withdraw. A licensed casino in these states cannot do that once you have cleared the terms. How regulated US casino bonuses are structured covers the wider rules.
Common questions
Can a licensed US casino cap what I win from a bonus?
Not once you have met the terms, in the states we checked. New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan rules all bar a licensed operator from capping or limiting the winnings you earned in a promotion after you satisfy its conditions.
Can I cancel a casino bonus after accepting it?
In New Jersey and Michigan the rules require a clear way to cancel a promotion that uses restricted credits, and New Jersey requires the casino to show what cash you get back and what bonus value is removed before you confirm.
What happens if I bet more than a bonus's maximum bet?
If the terms set a bet limit, breaking it can void the bonus and the winnings made with it. Not every offer has one, so read the terms for a stated maximum before you raise your stake.
